EDISON - Police are advising New Jersey residents to be careful when making charitable donations, after recent charity scams throughout the state.
Edison police say someone was caught setting up a collection drive at a Wal-Mart on Route 27, soliciting donations to the Child Protection Education of America (CPEA) charity. The organization has been defunct since 2009. Others have been caught around the state using the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots logo to collect donations.
Anyone who spots a charity drive using the CPEA logo is asked to contact police. Edison Police Sgt. Robert Dudash also suggests calling the local Marine headquarters to ensure any Toys for Tots drives are legitimate.
